Catherine thinks, in her sleep-addled state, that she may never find a nice man and marry off because her best friend is truly all she needs in life — is the only person she wants to spend her days with, was the only person she wanted in her past life too when she refused to marry again after Henry. She wonders if she might love Anne in a deeper, less platonic way — wonders if a woman can marry another woman or if it’s even legal to love another woman. She hopes it’s legal — hopes that women marry other women, really — because she thinks, half asleep with Anne’s warm body atop hers and loose hairs from her space buns in her nose and breathing her in, that she might love Anne in a way that shouldn’t be okay. She thinks that yes, maybe she might be in love with Anne Boleyn.
