Fics like Bad Bets and Sick Jokes

“Yeah? Tell me the last time you cared about anything but yourself, and I’ll take it all back,” Doc near whispers, honed in and focused this time, waiting for McQueen to prove his point and finally shatter whatever hope he’s still holding onto about a different life. Before he has time to react, Lightning darts forward without another word, his sweaty, dirt-crusted hands tangling into Doc’s hair and the curve of his shoulder. There’s a moment where Doc stands still, worried about this all being a joke, so convinced by his fears that he waits for the wet, hungry kiss to steal his breath before he leans into it. AKA: canon divergence where the argument in the garage goes differently-humans
