Fics like when that piano sang again

Nothing is the same after Overlord. It's unspoken. It's said in the tired, nervous glances at each other in the quiet days afterward. It's said in small smiles that try provide comfort they cannot muster because they are teenagers that... They lost. It's not a hard truth to admit, no matter how bitter, because that is the crux of it. They defeated Overlord but they did not win, and the consequences are ones they have to live with. Ones that echo in the silence of Defenders Hall and bounce around empty walls into emptier rooms. Consequences that leave a note on a countertop and an olive branch ignored and broken. William has been through a lot. Maybe not nearly as much as Vyncent - no, definitely not nearly as much. His life is laughably normal, both deaths and all, compared to dimension hopping by force. But through it all, regardless of how little he thinks of himself as a hero and how he doesn't quite believe in heroism, William never thought that being a hero in training would lead to this.
