At age 6, Tobio meets a red-haired boy named Shouyou. He is loud, nosy and very curious on volleyball, and although they don't understand each other's language, they spend many summer days together. At age 25, Tobio is an established setter for the Japan men's national volleyball team when a new wing spiker named Hinata is scouted. Hinata insists on knowing Tobio and tells him about all the many things they experienced as children. If only Tobio could remember him.
