Alina leaned against the fence, the smile falling off her face. She liked to see Mal like this, to see him this happy. After all, this was what he had always wanted. A simple life on a farm with her. A child. A happy family. At first, she wanted all of that too, or rather wanted to convince herself that she wanted it. But she didn’t. She missed her old life. She missed the halls of the Little Palace and chatting with her friends until way past midnight. She missed being useful for her country and being more than a wife, staying at home, cooking, and cleaning. But mostly, she missed her powers, and every time she felt the sunlight on her skin or watched her daughter summon, her heart ached, and she could feel the gaping hole inside her where her powers once were. A part of her was afraid that she might never feel whole again. Alina lives with Mal and their little daughter a quiet and simple life on a farm until one day, Nikolai stands in front of their door, and she finds out that someone she had believed long dead is alive. (Inspired by the musical Love Never Dies)
