Fics like madder than you

“You aren’t real”, she says before remembering that the doctor said to not interact with the illusions. “Maybe not”, the voice agrees. “Alice, will you look at me?” She presses her eyes shut with even more force and hears him sigh. It sounds exactly like she remembers, that sigh, which either means it is real and hasn’t changed, or it is unreal and exactly like her mind thought it should sound. She opens her eyes without meaning to, because she simply has to know, has to see him, even if he is just a figment of her imagination, she has missed seeing him so much, and there he stands, not having aged a day, hair in a wild mop, colourful clothes in their customary disarray. His eyes are different, she notes distantly. Sadder. His gaze catches hers and something in his face lifts. “Alice”, he says softly, like she is a wild rabbit and he is afraid of scaring her. Maybe she is a rabbit. Who is to say, really. “Hatter”, she responds, voice rough and shaky, digging her fingernails into her palms. He has to be real, she thinks, because the nurse saw him. Only if the nurse isn’t real… Does it matter, in the end? He is here to her, whether he truly is or isn’t, and she has missed him dearly.
