Fics like i can change everything about me to fit in

Gretchen starts picking her cuticles — the skin around her fingernails too — the summer between fifth grade and sixth, when they’re straddling the cusp between young and innocent children and harsh, hormonal preteens. Regina tells her to stop, that it chips the acrylic and makes her nails ugly, but she just can’t — especially not around Regina. Regina makes her nervous — makes Gretchen’s skin prickle and her stomach turn and her hands clammy — more nervous than another child has any right to, but it doesn’t stop the way her hands shake, fingers habitually pulling and picking at the skin around her nails — a pretty pink acrylic that Regina chose.
