Fics like some kind of semblance of something I've been remembering

The mask was a curious thing, and not only for the effect it had on its wearers. It was not necessarily alive, at least not by human standards, but it did have some awareness and will of its own, imbued by whatever being that created it. The mask rarely had any one owner for long, but this wasn’t much concern to the thing itself. Its primary goal was to spread mischief and chaos, and that could be done well enough, oftentimes even better, when it could hop from face to face. Outside of this goal, the whims of the mask were its own, and didn’t particularly care to stay with any one companion for too long anyways. Usually, at least.
