Fics like Morbid Little Game

It is a morbid little game they play, sometimes, when it’s 3 a.m. and the wind is blowing too loudly outside the window and the weight of the world and the war sits too heavily on their bed. When their fingers ache from clutching their wands, shoulders taut with tension, legs tired of jumping at each unexpected squeal from Harry, each rustling of leaves outside, each yowl from Basil the cat. When their minds race long into the night with the worry and the knowledge and the guilt and the sorrow that their best and last living friends are preparing themselves to die for their infant child. When they can’t sleep, they placate themselves by playing at preparedness. It will go like this, they say.
