Fics like Let's Dance, You and I

Aside from his family — and that includes Roland, Wat, Chaucer and Kate, whatever they or he might think about it — there are only two people who see Will for what he truly is. Edward, the Black Prince, and Adhemar of Anjou. Adhemar. He sees Will for what he is because he refuses to see him any other way. To Adhemar, he’ll always be a thatcher’s son, a peasant, knighthood or not. He’ll always be a challenge. Will should hate that — he does, sometimes, when Adhemar humiliates him on the field of courtly etiquette, the only one on which he is at a true disadvantage — but hate doesn’t quite cover it. Hate shouldn’t thrill you. Hate might make you pursue your rival through the lists at tourney after tourney, but it shouldn’t make your throat heat when you feel his eyes on you before a battle. Or, Will and Adhemar have an infuriating ability to pick up on each other's weaknesses.
