Fics like let the melody lift me high, I'll be me

Shinji can’t help but stare at him. He doesn’t think he has ever seen Kaworu, in all his past lives, laugh like that. A gentle soul, Kaworu has always been generous with his smiles. But he is rarely this happy, if ever. Happy not for someone’s sake, but for himself. The thought of Kaworu growing up being surrounded by love, knowing that he is loved, makes his heart ache. Something hot curls in his chest, threatening to burst out. - In the EVA-less world, Shinji goes about his day like any adult. What should have been a simple morning distraction turns out to be an opportunity he doesn't know he wants. As promised, they will always find each other.
