Fics like A Burled Wood, With Knotted Grain

Bruce murmurs into the dark stillness of Dick’s pristine bedroom, “Whatever you want.” As rich as Bruce is, Dick doesn’t think that's quite true. If Dick was free to ask for whatever he wanted, he would ask to go back to Haly’s and see his parents waving at him from the trapeze. But neither Bruce Wayne nor the Batman can make that happen, and that’s not helpful to anybody right now. Instead, Dick curls up with Bruce and listens to the steady heartbeat of his new life lull him into a dreamless sleep. When he is nine, Dick leaves the spotlights, takes Bruce's hand and goes into the darkness. “You mouth off to Batman like this? Or do you do this to everyone?” Slade chuckles, “Your teachers must love you.” Robin tilts his head, “What teachers? Batman teaches me.” “You know, the teachers at whatever godforsaken school you attend.” “Oh.” There’s a flat tone to Robin’s response that has Slade twisting to look at him. “You do go to school, right?” “Uh.” Dick blinks, realizing he’s in a bit over his head. “Yes.” “Really.” Slade says, equally flat. “Tell me when spring break is this year then.”
