Fics like just me and you, our golden room

It was Alice’s first ball, and she wasn’t allowed to dance, a fact she found tremendously unfair. She was sixteen and had no male relatives present, both of which she thought should be points in favor of her dancing with dashing strangers but somehow were not. So instead she was cloistered in a side parlor, eating too much chocolate and listening to a running commentary on the dancing nobility from Alfred. Alfred, who had been her neighbor since forever, who was never much for parties but had come tonight as her escort because she wheedled, who had warned her that balls weren’t all they were cracked up to be-- although she hated to admit he was right. There was a sly glint in his eye as he looked through the curtain into the grand dining room. “If the Duchess drinks one more glass of wine, I do think she’s going to try to fistfight her Majesty.”
