Fics like Settling In

A man on the drift wasn't beholden to nobody; his troubles were his own and his secrets stayed between him and his horse. Jobs were just that: he earned his pay and moved on. On the Sherman spread, though, a common cowhand got a spot at the dinner table, a chair by the fire, and three sets of sharp eyes on every move he made. Jess'd signed on to rope cows and mend fences. So why was there a kid bounding up to chatter at him every afternoon, an old coot fussing over every cut he didn't hide fast enough, and a stork-legged do-gooder making him think too much about every decision he'd ever made? When'd everything get so dadgum complicated? A reluctant, bewildered Jess sidles into domesticity with the ranch's patchwork family. Set just after Laramie S1E1: Stage Stop. AU.
