In a way, Chan had applied for this position—and taken it—as a test of his own patience. As a measure of how much he could take; he’ll bend, and bend, and bend, but will he break? There is often no hot water in the dorms. No Internet, no phone service. He spends most of his waking hours slightly damp from the rain or from the river, shivering. Blisters, calluses, mosquito bites. He hasn’t had any chocolate in three weeks. But he can take it. All of that is fine. He tolerates it: bends, but does not break. He’s proud of himself for how well he can take it. However, it’s not like the limit does not exist. It very much exists, and its name is Hyunjin.
