Fics like And I fall, obsessed with the memories of what once was

Xichen realises then, that the other isn’t going to back down, that this isn’t a mere courtesy visit to express sympathies and move on. He frowns, weary and burnt out. He wasn’t prepared for an argument, he wasn’t even prepared to have a simple conversation. So Xichen puts his foot down, “I’m sorry to hear that, Sect Leader Jiang. I’m sorry to have disappointed you. But, my decision is final.” He picks himself off the ground and makes his way towards the door, desperate to be left alone. “I will call for a disciple to escort you back.” “That’s it, then? You’re just giving up?” Jiang Cheng scoffs, bringing himself to his feet. It’s like a pop, or a crack perhaps, somewhere in his own head, then Xichen hears his own gravelly voice, void of the calculated polite tone he usually carries. “I am not giving up.” Xichen hisses. He’s far too tired for this. “And I am not hiding.” Xichen turns back, takes in the sight of the other man, who is bristling with displeasure, and decides he can be the same. tl;dr : Post mdzs canon of xicheng navigating their trauma, with a hint of chengxian reconciliation
