When Merlin almost dies saving Arthur and chooses to reveal his magic to him when he wakes up, he is temporarily relieved of his duties as the king's manservant because Arthur needs time to readjust. After a month of ignoring him, Arthur asks for Merlin's help with a matter he's been stressing over, and well, when has Merlin ever been able to deny his king anything? - He raises his hands hesitantly to cup Arthur’s face before leaning in, and whispers softly for only him to hear. “Forgive me if I am crossing a line.” A second later he’s kissing Arthur, knowing that he will regret it in the morning, that he will probably regret it even right after. But it’s so gentle and Merlin feels so completely, utterly happy that he realizes he doesn't really mind after all. He pulls back, earlier than he would like, but he forces himself to open his eyes and look at Arthur still. “Did I cross a line?” Arthur smiles, so beautifully that it's downright ethereal. “Yes. I just regret that you beat me to it.”
