Fics like Not Wanting in Steadiness

It begins as a joke. Emma promises to paint him a wedding portrait and draws back, laughing, when she sees the ill-concealed look of horror on his face. “What!” she cries, “are you afraid I’ll make you too tall?” “Nothing of the sort,” replies Mr. Knightley -- her Mr. Knightley, as she has begun designating him in letters to her sister, though Isabella simply calls her husband John. “I simply fear you may be trying to marry me off. And I had thought we’d settled that matter to the contentment of both parties.”
