Fics like One and the same

There is a door at the end of the corridor and it's to that door the maybe-person runs. And, as the door opens, something changes. The snapping hurts more than he can ever describe in silly human words, the words he now knows are all he has. He doesn’t care though, not anymore. All he cares about is reaching that boat, reaching her. Michael Shelley shouts to her and Gertrude turns, seeing her assistant rushing down the slope that never existed. He feels tears crawl down his face, tears of joy or fear or sadness, he doesn’t know and he doesn’t care to find out. ~~~~~~~~~~ Michael Shelley flees Sannikov land before it can take him, and finds himself back in the archives, cursed with the knowledge that had been hidden from him for so many years. And he choses to stay there. Staying, even as a new archivist takes Gertrude's place.
