Fics like To Not Vainly Break Branches

"It gets lonely in the Gentian Palace, Wangji," his brother says, something like a gentle rebuke in his voice, "You might remember it less clearly than I do, but Mother was always lonely too. I merely do not want the Empress to suffer the same fate." Lan Wangji does not remember much of Mother, only remembers the feeling of warmth and the soft hum of her songs, the gold of her eyes shining with what he now realises was longing. Unbidden, he remembers the shadow of a face behind a curtain of gossamer red, a face he never even unveiled. After three years of fighting a war and being away from the Imperial Palace, Lan Wangji finds himself falling for an Empress he's all but forgotten having wed.
