Fics like so rhett says to scarlett,

Shane leaves after killing Otis. Over a year later, his return has unexpected consequences for the group—and for Rick. His first impression of Shane is the heavy fall of combat boots on the bare floorboards. A sense of motion from the shadowed corner, and he steps into view. He looks, impossibly, just as he did the night he left—even wearing the same clothes. It’s as though he only stepped forward in time, departing that night from Hershel’s farm and arriving here, having forwent all the living in between.
