Fics like The Secrets We Keep So That Others May Sleep

Heine never imagined he would have a life like this. He thought he would end up dead on a battle field somewhere, used as a puppet in what seemed like an endless war. He thought he would have been captured and executed for all the blood that stained his hands. When they did come for him, however, he chose to live instead of die at the very hands that he had served. He traveled through countries, looking for rest and safety. He chose Granzreich as his final resting ground. He had grown tired, but there were so many like him, lost and alone. So he took them in and led them, showing them what was necessary to survive a world that did not see them. Then he met Viktor, and his whole world changed. For a moment, everything was wonderful. What he had found with Viktor was beautiful. The warmth that existed between them, the love that sprouted from what he once that was his dead heart, made him see everything in a whole new light. He had felt hope for what seemed like the very first time in many years. And then Viktor got shot, and it was all his fault. After that night, Heine knew he had to protect what was most important to him. And in order to do so, Heine knew that no one could know who he was. Not even his own children.
