A chance detour on the way home brings Percival Graves to a river where he rescues a pair of stray kittens. It doesn't take long to adopt them as his own despite his efforts to remain at a distance; but soon he realizes that there is something more to them than meets the eye, something he can't quite place a finger on. And then one morning, he wakes up with two strange men in his bedroom, the kittens nowhere to be found.
