Fics like The Best Man

John Watson(-Holmes) may be the reason that Sherlock (Watson-)Holmes is a good man, but Greg Lestrade is the only reason Sherlock survived long enough to meet John. Because one day, Greg started having one hell of a week, met Sherlock Holmes -- then 22, high as a kite, and obviously brilliant -- and made it his goal to get the kid clean and gainfully employed (however unconventionally). It's only later he learns just how far gone Sherlock had been before Greg found him and helped. (Sherlock may be a good and great man. John may be (in Sherlock's words) a war hero. But Greg? He's the best man.)
