A millennia after the time of the Pharaohs, the descendants of the once-royal bloodline are sworn to protect the Millennium Items. Atem’s family, although battered and bruised from their long-term exposure to the Items, continues to search for those that elude their grasp - the Puzzle and the Eye. While the Eye’s whereabouts are anyone’s guess, it seems to be a stroke of luck that the Puzzle has fallen into the hands of one of the students at Atem’s new school. It isn’t, though. Not for Yugi, whom serves as the vessel for a spirit better described as a mangled mess of sacrificed souls that inhabit the Puzzle. And, as Japan begins to suffer from an onslaught of creatures from the darkest depths of the Shadow Realm, Atem realises that separating Yugi from the Puzzle is not just a difficult task - it might be impossible. Or: Pharaoh Atem was gifted this life to make up for the sufferings he and many others faced in Ancient Egypt. The Puzzle’s new bearer is dealt a hand nowhere near as fortunate.
